The balcony overlooked this area between several blocs of flats. One of the people whose land was confiscated by the state when these blocs were built made a claim after the Revolution. Instead of giving him some comparable land elsewhere, he was awarded a large chunk in the middle of the communal courtyard where he promptly put up a fence and a locked gate.
